Icey treats bring a warm glow

Customers of Shepherds Ice Cream raise over 1,000 for The Music Pool's SPLASH! Appeal

The Music Pool's SPLASH! Appeal received a sizeable boost at the beginning of this month, thanks to Shepherds Ice Cream and their customers.

Owners, Juliet Noble and Martin Orbach, nominated The Music Pool as their chosen charity over the summer and customers in their ice cream parlour in Hay-on-Wye, munched, licked and brain-freezed their way through their delicious ice creams to raise a whopping 1060 for the charity!

Shepherds Ice Cream made their first batch of ice cream
in 1987, a few years after owners Juliet and Martin bought a small farm in the west of Herefordshire.  Initially they had set themsleves up to sell the milk, from their milking sheep, to cheese makers, but they hit upon the idea to make their own product.  So in the spring of that year, they made their first batch of ice cream in five different flavours: Vanilla, Strawberry, Ginger, Lemon and Carob(!), becoming the first commercial producers of ice cream from sheep's milk.  They began to sell at agricultural shows and local events and swiftly took the decision to sell directly to the public rather than to wholesalers because it was an entirely more satiysfying experience.

The ice cream business grew gradually until in 1997 when Juliet and Martin decided to sell the milking flock and concentrate exclusively on ice cream making.  They now source their milk from Philip Keen near Stratford-on-Avon, one of the UK's best and most experience sheep milkers.  On 1st April 2000, they opened up their very own ice cream parlour in Hay-on-Wye and they continue to sell their unique ice creams at festivals and events, including their regular spot at Hay Festival of Literature and the Arts.

For anyone that has tasted their ice creams, there will be no suprise at Shepherds popularity and their customers insatiable appetite for their amazing selection of flavours, which changes with the seasons, however their was no hiding how delightfully surprised we all were at the 1060 customers helped to raise by enjoying the delicious cold treats.  "We could never have guessed that it would raise over 1,000.  It was an unexpected boost to the charity and we are very, VERY grateful" said Rob Strawson, Director of The Music Pool.

The Music Pool would like to thank each and every customer who helped raise so much for the charity and our huge, heartfelt thanks go to Juliet Noble, Martin Orbach and all who work for Shepherds Ice Cream for their genorosity.

The funds raised will help continue the worthwhile projects The Music Pool programme and enable throughout Herefordshire and beyond.
