Caught on Film! 436 performers in Cathedral–Music Pool collaboration

Over a year in the making, the entertaining and uplifting film of a successful collaboration between Hereford Cathedral, The Music Pool, and thirteen Herefordshire secondary schools, is now available to the public.

It was only about halfway through The Stonemason’s Tale, a year-long educational project in Herefordshire’s secondary schools, that project-partners Hereford Cathedral and The Music Pool decided to capture the events on film.

“We’re very glad now that we decided to make this film,” comments Music Pool director, Rob Strawson, “because it’s a fantastic record of the achievement of hundreds of our school students, working together with other schools.”

Through a series of memorable workshop activities and events, brought to Herefordshire's 11-14 year olds by specialist artists and tutors, the historical, social and spiritual connections between the Cathedral Close and the people of Hereford were explored and celebrated throughout the 2010-2011 school year in 121 workshops and experiences offered free of charge to participating schools.

The project peaked in a day of festivities on Wednesday 29th June 2011 when audiences experienced dazzling performances of dance, music and drama inside the Cathedral grounds, a stunning photography exhibition, and a 430-strong procession full of pageantry, colour and music that brought the centre of the city to a happy standstill.

The Stonemason’s Tale was the final educational project that accompanied Hereford Cathedral’s 2009-2011 renovation of the Cathedral Close. The Cathedral’s Jo Henshaw, who project-managed the educational programme, said,

“We welcomed hundreds of people to the cathedral for the performances, and hundreds more watched the parade. However, not everyone was able to get here, and this film shows all the best bits, plus behind-the-scenes footage, the historical inspiration, and comments from the students, their teachers, the workshop tutors and the organisers. It’s definitely got The Feel-Good Factor!”

The film is obtainable through the Cathedral Shop or by contacting the Cathedral Office on 01432 374200.

The Stonemason’s Tale and the project to renovate Hereford Cathedral Close were supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, and other generous donors.

The DVD is 45mins long, and beautifully captures the excitement of the June 2011 Pageant Day itself, as well as the fascinating 2-year process leading up to it.
